Why today
Character.AI says exports can take 3 to 4 weeks to process. The company is being sold under court supervision and expects the sale to close in late November or early December. It keeps running during the sale, but it has said it will wind the platform down if no buyer keeps it going (TechCrunch). Asking now gives you the best chance of having your data before then.
Ask for it on the web
- Go to your Profile.
- Click Profile Settings.
- Click Account.
- Click Manage Account & Data.
- Click Export Data.
A pop-up confirms that you’ll get an email with a link to download your data.
Or ask in the app
- Open your Profile.
- Tap the Settings icon.
- Tap Legal & Privacy.
- Tap Export Data.
A “Success” banner shows your request went through.
Ask once, then wait. Don’t delete your Character.AI account while you wait: keep it until your export has arrived and you’ve saved it.
Wait for the email
It can take 3 to 4 weeks. Character.AI sends it to the email address on your account. Check your spam folder too.
Download it within 7 days
Character.AI says the link is valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent, so download it the day it arrives. Use a computer if you can, since that’s where you’ll stamp it and keep it safe. Keep the file exactly as it arrives.
Using Safari on a Mac?
If the download is a ZIP, Safari may unzip it for you and move the ZIP to the Trash. Before you download, choose Safari, then Settings, click General, and turn off Open “safe” files after downloading. If it has already happened, click the Trash in the Dock, select the ZIP, and choose File, then Put Back.
What’s in it
Character.AI doesn’t say what the export contains. Keep the file as it arrives, even if you can’t open it. If you’ve already saved chats or character details some other way, keep those files too.
Then stamp it.
