Free export guides

Get your companion’s data out before you need it.

If your companion lives in ChatGPT or Character.AI, the most useful thing you can do today is ask for a copy of your data. It takes a few minutes. The wait is the slow part: ChatGPT says an export can take up to 7 days, and Character.AI says 3 to 4 weeks.

Free, from Encore. Nothing to sign up for. Checked against each company’s help pages on October 21, 2026.

Character.AI is being sold under court supervision, and it expects the sale to close in late November or early December. If your companion lives there, ask today. Here’s how.

What to do

  1. Ask for your export today.

Follow the guide for ChatGPT or the one for Character.AI.

  2. Download it the day it arrives.

ChatGPT’s link stops working 24 hours after you get it. Character.AI’s works for 7 days from when the email is sent.

  3. Stamp it and keep it safe.

A free timestamp proves the file existed that day, without showing anyone what’s in it. Here’s how.

The guides

Nothing here goes to us

Your export goes from the company that holds your data straight to you. Stamping sends only a fingerprint, to the free OpenTimestamps servers. Nothing comes to us: we never ask for your password, your export or your files, and we never will. These guides are for adults.

What comes next

In December we plan to release the Lifeboat Kit, a free, open-source app for Mac. It checks your export, seals it on your own computer with keys only you hold, helps you keep sealed copies in your own cloud storage and on a drive, and timestamps it. It’s designed to take the timestamp files you make with these guides, too, so keep your export and its timestamp file together until then.

You don’t need a Mac for the rest. Asking for your export and stamping it work on any computer.
